Home > About Collecting

South Shore Antiques Gallery has formed very strong and definitive opinions through the years relating to the topic of collecting.

Our opinion holds that the most important aspect of deciding what to collect (and where to begin) is governed by what you, the ultimate purchaser, like.  Most people are surprised to hear just how simple it is.  I have frequently been approached by an individual eager to begin a collection and asked “what is the best investment”?  That is exactly the wrong approach to collecting in our opinion.  Once you have determined your area(s) of interest, become educated by absorbing relevant written material, visit museums, talk to professionals, and visit dealers who inventory your desired item.  Only then is it advisable to ask what the best investment would be.

The simple rule of thumb when determining whether an antique will appreciate through time is based upon its’ initial value when it was produced, rarity, and condition.  For example, a Tammany mechanical bank in excellent original condition will not fair as well economically as a rare Calamity mechanical bank in comparable condition.
